Our Responsibilities

The specific responsibilities of the Institute are to:

  1. Produce qualified manpower and professionals who are competent, skilled, practical and adaptable to the current demands in the field of gender and development studies.
  2. Conduct seminars, workshops, symposia and other relevant activities that will enhance research and development in the areas of women, gender and development studies.
  3. Mount relevant certificate, diploma and degree programmes in women, gender and development studies.
  4. Develop research fellowships, linkages, faculty and student exchanges in the areas of expertise with national and international partners.
  5. Conduct research in the areas of need that are relevant to the objectives of IWoGDS.

Our Strategies

The Institute will adopt the following strategies:

Teaching and research in the areas of women, gender and development.

Gender Analysis – This involves a well-articulated and systematic gathering and examination of information on gender differences and social relations in order to identify, understand and redress inequities based on gender.

Gender Planning – The activities here will address the technical processes and procedures for ensuring appropriate formulation and implementation of gender-based policies.

Gender Mainstreaming – The activities will centre around strategies aimed at providing gender perspectives in institutional policies and programmes. It will also provide a platform for capacity building and social justice.

Development of a Database – A robust database will be developed to provide information on women, gender and development issues particularly in areas such as entrepreneurship, climate change, conflict, violence, poverty, culture, disasters, health, agriculture, science and technology, education, human rights among others.

Collaboration – The Institute will actively develop linkages with national and international organisations to facilitate adequate networking for the actualisation of her goals.

Development of a Gender Library – This will serve as a resource centre where print and electronic materials will be stored and also made easily accessible to staff, students and the general public. It will provide opportunity for individual and group learning. Being a resource centre, there will be huge collections of materials on gender and arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences, religion, education, law, technology, health, environment, family, agriculture etc.

Gender Laboratory – The Laboratory will serve as a women and gender diagnostic centre. Gender issues will be identified and investigated with a view to proffering sustainable solutions.

The Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWoGDS) is a multi-disciplinary academic and research Unit in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). The Institute, which was formerly known as Centre for Women, Child, Research and Development (CWCRD), was established and granted full academic status by the University Senate at its 338th Meeting held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. However, in order to reflect the general practice around the world by practitioners, promote diversity and gender equality and equity, the University Senate at its 358th Meeting held on 27th March, 2012, changed the name from CWCRD to Centre for Women, Gender and Development Studies (CWGDS); and later upgraded it to the Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWoGDS) at its 397th Meeting held on the 22nd September 2015. The Institute has continued to be a leading centre of academic excellence and innovation in the areas of women, gender and development studies at local, national and international levels; and has aggressively engaged in activities and programmes that promote teaching, research and community service in women, gender and development related issues with far-reaching positive impact on the University, its environs and beyond.

In particular, we have held eight International Conferences; hosted annual Workshops to commemorate global celebrations that are relevant to our mandate such as the International Women’s Day, World Environment Day, World HIV/AIDS Day, Global Handwashing Day and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls.  We have equally held annual Training Workshops on empowerment of women, men and youths on farming for sustainable livelihood.

We have published eight editions of our highly rated International Journal of Gender and Development Studies (which attracted TETFUND sponsorship), Conference Books of Abstracts and Proceedings.  We have published seven editions of our Bulletin The Insight through which we disseminate our various activities to the public. Activities of the Institute can now be accessed through our web page, www.iwogds.futoweb.com. 

We have also published a Sexual Health Handbook for Young People  Be at Peace with Your Body with ISBN: 978-978-52056-4-6.

As a multidisciplinary Academic and Research Unit, we have mounted Post-Graduate Programmes in Gender and Development Studies, Gender and Technology, Gender and Science, Gender and Agricultural Technology, Gender and Global Health, and Gender and Entrepreneurship. Our research activities include Needs Assessment Study for the University host communities in 2012; Gender Trend Audit of Staff and Students of the University, Evaluation of the Extent of Achievement of the MDGs in the Niger-Delta Region of Nigeria sponsored by TETFUND, Gender Characteristics and Conflict Management in Imo East Senatorial Zone, Gender and Health-Seeking Behaviour of Residents of Owerri West LGA of Imo State, and Indices for Measuring the Interest of Girl-Child in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Subjects in Imo State.

Her Excellency, Prof. (Noble Lady) Viola Adaku Onwuliri, B.Sc.(Hons.) Biochem. (Nig.), M.Sc., Applied Organic Chemistry (Jos), Ph.D. Biochemistry (Jos), PGDE, Certificate in Human Ethics (Harvard), FNSBMB, FNISEB, FWIMA, EU-WIIN, LKSJI, JP, ALOHA is a Professor of Biochemistry (UNIJOS 2004) and later of FUTO (2007); and Wife of the 5th Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, Professor C.O.E Onwuliri, FAS. She was the initiator and pioneer Director of the IWoGDS, FUTO (then known as the Center for Women, Child Research and Development), 2010-2012; Pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the Federal Maritime University in Delta State and St. Albert Institute of Higher Studies, Kafanchan; African Representative on the Governing Council of the International AIDS’S Geneva (2004-2012); and Honourable Minister both in Foreign Affairs and Education. She also attracted many Federal Government projects to educational institutions including FUTO and IMSU. She has been honoured with over 260 awards globally including: Most Outstanding Female Minister in Nigeria Award; Best Performing Minister Award; Outstanding Minister Award; Peace Ambassador Award; European Union Women Award for Innovative Leadership, etc.


Dr Mrs C A Madu

Prof. Chinyere Ada Madu holds B.Sc. Physics (UNN), M.Sc. and PhD in Solid State Physics (FUTO). She joined the services of FUTO in 1998 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Physics and rose to the rank of Reader in October, 2013. Her area of specialization is in Theoretical Solid State Physics while her primary research interests are in Electronic Structure Calculations and Renewable Energy. She has served the University in various capacities as Deputy Director, Centre for Continuing Education, CCE 2011-2012; Acting Director, Centre for Continuing Education, CCE 2012-2014; Acting Director, Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies, IWoGDS 2016-2017;etc. She has been the Acting Head, Department of Physics, from July 2017. She has published widely in both local and international journals and has attended many local and international conferences and workshops. Chinyere is a devout Christian and is happily married to Engr. Greg Madu and the marriage is blessed with children.


Prof. Mrs I P Asiabaka

The challenges of globalisation have made management of organisations a subject of much debate and analysis. Efficiency and effectiveness in managerial performance determine the extent of actualisation of the organisational goals. As a Professor of Management in the School of Management Technology, Prof. Asiabaka’s research efforts focus on measures that add value to institutional performance through above average quality achievement by continuous improvement of all operations, functions and processes in organisations. She has been the Head, Department of Management Technology, SMAT, FUTO; has taught and supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate courses and students in Imo State University, Owerri and FUTO. Prof. Mrs Asiabaka has held several administrative and academic positions including serving as the Director of IWoGDS, FUTO (2012-2016) during which the curricula for the Postgraduate Diploma and M.Sc. Programmes of the Institute were developed. She was the first Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gender and Development Issues (IJGDI) 2013-2016. She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Prof. Mrs Gloria Nkiruka Okwu is a Professor of Biochemistry in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, M.Sc. in Biochemistry from University of Colorado, Boulder and Ph.D in Nutritional/Medical Biochemistry from Federal University of Technology, Owerri. With over 35 years of teaching and research experience in both the United States of America and Nigeria, Prof. Mrs Okwu has several publications to her credit in international and local journals. Her research interests are in the areas of Nutrition, Child and Maternal Health, Medicinal Plant Research and Environmental Toxicology. Her research findings have resulted in notable and significant contributions in the areas of pharmaceutical biochemistry and environmental toxicology. Some of these findings were presented at the Global Biotechnology Congress, Boston, USA in 2014 and 2015; and International Conference on Environment and Natural Science, Washington DC, USA, in 2019. She has held several administrative positions including Director of Office for University Development (2012-2015), and has been the Director, Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (2017 to date). She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gender and Development Issues (IJGDI) (2017 to date).
